Abstract:

Managing mature fields efficiently requires continuous monitoring of the changes in formation fluid saturation. Gas inside boreholes is usually the most challenging condition for logging, where gas measurements are hampered by the lack of a fluid column. Thanks to the improved technology, a new generation of pulsed neutron logging (PNL) tools was introduced that greatly reduces the evaluation uncertainty and delivers more reliable gas saturation. The new PNL tools maintain high-resolution up to 175°C and provide a new formation property – fast neutron cross-section – an independent method to quantify gas saturation. The tool also counts with a new self-compensation algorithm for formation sigma and hydrogen index measurements that allow the accurate evaluation for a wide range of logging conditions. These features altogether provide much more reliable hydrocarbon saturation in such a tough environment. The new PNL tool was put in operation in several wells in clastic gas-condensate field A, Nam Con Son basin. These wells recently experienced high-water production. The Gas Water Contact (GWC) movement estimation and the water production forecast are challenging due to the complex structure of the reservoirs and the uncertain size and strength of the aquifers. Additionally, high formation temperature and gas-filled boreholes limited the use of previous-generation of PNL tools. The new PNL tool with the outstanding self-compensating algorithm was precisely fit to handle these problems. The tool successfully determined the current fluid contact and quantified the remaining gas saturation in the reservoirs. This gave the operator a better understanding of the reservoirs and enabled better reservoir management strategy.

Kim Nguyen Pham Thien is currently working in Schlumberger’s Analysis and Interpretation business as Petrophysicist, supporting both Wireline and Drilling and Measurements (D&M) activities. Her focal area is formation evaluation in open holes/ cased holes and development of acoustics answer products. Her working experience embraces both clastic and carbonate reservoirs located across Southeast Asia, North and South America, and the Middle East… Kim holds a BEng from HCMUT in Geology and Petroleum. She is a member of SPE with some SPE joint publications with clients.

Dr. Son Hoang is the lead reservoir engineer at BIENDONG POC. He supervises reservoir engineering, geomechanics-related works, and the application of machine learning and data science in subsurface works at BIENDONG POC. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. in civil engineering, both from the University of Oklahoma. Before joining BIENDONG POC, he worked as a postdoctoral research scientist at the PoroMechanics Institute, University of Oklahoma.
